OPPORTUNITIES!

Funding opportunity for clinical investigators from the Doris Duke Foundation. Clinical research is defined for the purpose of this award as” the scientific investigation of the etiology, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of human disease using human subjects, human populations (including health services and epidemiology), or materials of human origin. Included in the definition are studies that utilize tissues or pathogens only if they can be linked to a patient.”  This is a 3-year award, $150,000 direct costs each year, for those at the instructor or assistant professor level (no longer than four years).  Deadline November 13.

Do you know of anyone who is ready to be a Chief of Endocrinology? The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is looking for one.  See a description here.

The Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard University is a one-year, full-time, academic degree-granting program designed to prepare physicians, particularly physicians from groups underrepresented in medicine, to become leaders who improve the health of disadvantaged and vulnerable populations through transforming health care delivery systems and promoting innovation in policies, practices and programs that address health equity and the social determinants of health. Do you know someone who might be ready, willing, and able to devote a year to this program?  Details are here.  The deadline is December 1.

RESOURCES DISCUSSED

Academy of Communication in Health Care

Washington Monthly & Lown Institute’s “Best Hospitals for America ranking system? https://washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/july-august-2020/introducing-the-best-hospitals-for-america/ This ranking places high value on civic leadership/community engagement/diversity. The fact that there is virtually no overlap between this and the more commonly cited rankings like US News is illustrative of the lack of inclusion of civic engagement/diversity etc as a central pillar of academic medical institutions/medical education. In many ways a tearing down and rebuilding (or at least a *major* shift) is necessary to meet this need.

Another great resource National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation and resources they have see https://ncdd.org/rc/

Several years ago a nursing colleague -Dr. Phyllis Kritek wrote a great book : Negotiating at an Uneven Table makes explicit many of the issues being discussed and suggests strategies for managing self in the face of the challenges https://avrl.catalogue.library.ns.ca/Record/348697/Excerpt
